Media
Media is an important tool, something we can use to help us communicate better with other people. It has the power to attract attention, focus people’s thoughts on what you want them to know, and to persuade others to see things your way.

At St Patrick’s College Media is an elective subject available through Years 10-12. It is a subject which has enjoyed extensive growth within the College in the past few years with individual students winning a several prestigious awards.

In Media, students are involved in both theoretical and practical learning activities. They are introduced to the skills involved in the media production process (exploring, designing, experimenting and refining) and they create their own media productions within mediums such as film/video, digital photography, animation and print (newspapers/magazines). Students have the opportunity to develop expertise in software programs such as Premier Pro, Flash and Photoshop. Students also study the influence of the media in their own lives and the way in which the media represents their world, a world which is different to their own experience.

The College celebrates the achievements of its Year 12 Media students each year (along with the best works from students in Years 10 and 11) in its annual Film Festival, SPAM (St Patrick’s Awards for Media), where various awards are given as judged by an independent panel of judges, including Old Collegians and former winners.

2020 St Patrick’s College Media Awards

St Patrick’s College is excited to introduce a new format for our Annual Media Awards, where we seek to showcase the talents of our senior students and their incredible short films.

Previously known as SPAM (the St Pat’s Award for Media), from 2018 the awards have been renamed.

The award for Best Film each year will be known as the Borell Best Film Award in honour of the Borell family who have a connection to the school stretching back more than a century. Chris Borell (SPC 2010-13) was the first (and to date, only) multiple winner of the SPAM award, having won in 2012 and 2013.

In 2018 we also introduced the Powlett People’s Choice Award in honour of the Powlett family who have been long-time supporters of Media Studies at the College (and have also starred in many student films over the years).

The Borell Award is annually determined by senior Media Department staff while the Powlett Award is determined by the viewing public.
