Where are they now – Patrick Duffy (SPC 1989-94)
March 19, 2024
The College recently reconnected with Patrick Duffy (SPC 1989-94) who has travelled extensively with his successful career in the mining industry and believes his time as a boarder gave him the stepping stones required for the life he has today.
Where has life taken you since leaving SPC?
Since leaving St Pat’s, I have lived in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Manila and New Caledonia. We returned to Melbourne in 2015 after 10 years overseas.
Do you have family ties with SPC?
No
What are your fondest memories of your time at St Patrick’s College?
I loved being a border at St Pat’s, I have some very fond memories of playing cricket with the Second XI, and I was fortunate to have some great teachers that got the best out of me.
Which teacher from your time at SPC had the greatest impact on you? Why?
Too old to remember!
How has your education shaped your professional life?
I am now CEO of Sunstone Metals, an ASX-listed, South American copper and gold exploration company. I have had a very successful career in the mining industry, building two large mines in New Caledonia and Western Australia, and looking to do this again in South America. I matured greatly while boarding at St Pat’s and benefitted from a great education. I think the school made me humble and a natural empathy that has helped me in my career.
How has your time at SPC shaped your personal values and your family life?
I am happily married to Chantelle and three boys Xavier, Christian and Leo. I would like to think that SPC made me a great dad and husband.
If you could pass on one message to the students of today, what would it be?
Do your best, study hard and make the most of the opportunities for you to grow at SPC.
