About the Flanagan
The Flanagan Art Exhibition was established in 2008 in honour of Noel Flanagan, an Old Collegian and former curator of the Australian War Memorial.
This prestigious event invited artists from across Australia to compete for a $5000 prize for the most outstanding artwork. Additional cash prizes were awarded for the Best Emerging Artist and the Best Affordable Artwork. As an acquisitive competition, the exhibition enabled the College to build an impressive collection of winning pieces, now permanently displayed in Kennedy House, the College's administration building.
The exhibition's primary goal was to enrich the cultural experience of our students, fostering a deeper appreciation for fine art, and strengthening the College's commitment to the visual arts.
In 2019 the College shifted its approach, offering a $5000 Artist in Residence program, with highly acclaimed Melbourne-based artist Robert Lee Davis named the inaugural winner.
In 2025, the Flanagan Art Prize will return to its origins as a major exhibition at St Patrick’s College.
How to enter
- Entry forms must be completed online via St Patrick's College's website and are subject to the acceptance of the Conditions of Entry.
- A separate entry form must be completed for each artwork. Where an artwork is comprised of multiple components to be displayed as a single work, one entry form should be completed.
- Entry will not be accepted until payment has been made.
- Artists are required to upload up to three high-quality images of each artwork entry (one image representing the complete work and up to two images representing details of same work) in JPEG or PNG format and not more than 10MB.
- Entries must also include a short artist biography (single page PDF) and an artist statement about the submitted work, not exceeding 200 words, for inclusion on labels, catalogues and online.
- The closing date for entries is 11:59pm on Friday, 7 February 2025. Late entries will not be accepted.
- All details used in the artwork entry are final and no changes to the artwork, artist's name, artwork name, price of artwork, etc will be accepted after the registration is complete.

Conditions of entry
The Flanagan Art Prize is a competitive competition and exhibition. The Flanagan Art Prize is organised by St Patrick’s College, Ballarat. St Patrick’s College shall hereafter be referred to as the Organisers.
For the purposes of these Terms & Conditions, the following definitions apply:
- Artist refers to the person named as the artist in the completed entry form.
- Finalist refers to an entrant whose work is selected for display in the exhibition at St Patrick’s College.
- Prize winner refers to an entrant selected as prize winner in any category.
- The exhibition refers to the public display of shortlisted works at St Patrick’s College Old Collegians Pavilion.
