Wellbeing Report – October 22, 2015
October 21, 2015
Our Year 12 students effectively finished 13 years of schooling this week, as formal lessons end in preparation for final examinations and graduation. The school community had an opportunity to farewell the Year 12 cohort at a college assembly last Tuesday where Fr James Kerr offered the boys a blessing.
The presence of parents at the Year 12 Thanksgiving Mass attests to the vital role they have played in their sons’ education. Possibly most important is their very presence at key moments in their son’s lives. We tend to think children need their parents less as they grow older, but despite appearances and the impression adolescent boys can give about wanting to be free of their parents, often they need them more, but in different and deeper ways. Presence and availability can be the simplest, but most powerful way support can be given, be it at important events or simply at home at the end of the day. Thank you to all those parents who attended this event.
Transfer of Leadership Assembly
Finally, congratulations to John Brodie, College Captain 2016 and David O’Doherty and Hasker Dawborn, Vice-Captains, in being appointed to these positions. John, David and Hasker were handed these leadership positions at the transfer of leadership assembly last Tuesday by the 2015 College Captain Kelsey Gannon and Vice-Captains James McKinnon and Jacob Hopper, who we thanked for their dedicated service. John spoke exceptionally well to the assembled boys and staff, reflecting how much he understood and lived out the values of a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition. The members of the College Student Council and Congress were also announced. We congratulate all of the boys on their significant appointments and we look forward to working with them in 2016.
COLLEGE SUITCOAT
Given that we have had a burst of hot weather recently I thought it important to provide you with information regarding the wearing of the suitcoat to and from the College. I highlight an extract from the College Uniform Policy below for your information;-
During hot periods of weather and at the discretion of the Deputy Headmaster – Wellbeing, students may wear to and from school only the shirt and tie, together with EITHER the school shorts and the approved College long socks OR the school trousers and dark socks. The jumper however, must not be worn as the outer garment.-
On hot days the Deputy Headmaster will make an announcement over the PA advising students that suitcoats are not required on departure. On extended periods of hot weather students will be advised by email and in the daily notices that the suitcoat is not required to and from the College.
This information has been communicated to students and they are well aware of their obligations and of the process. I thank you in advance for your cooperation with this matter.
Mother Son Evening -“ Year 7
Finally, we welcome Bill Jennings from Time & Space who will be facilitating our Mother Son Evening which will be held in the O’Malley Gymnasium next Tuesday evening commencing at 7pm. Bill’s work is highly regarded not only here in Victoria but more broadly in Australia. We are very fortunate to have Bill’s expertise and I am sure that those in attendance will find it a great opportunity to connect at a deeper level with their son. I look forward to meeting our Year 7 students and their mother’s next Tuesday evening.
Best wishes for the week ahead.
Regards
Jon Franzin
