2016 Flanagan Art Prize – Gala Launch Countdown

Talented young artist Josh Muir (SPC 2004-09) is one of the finalists in the 2016 NAB Flanagan Art Exhibition which will be hosted by St Patrick’s College.

Josh, 24, was the brains behind the giant animated projections onto the National Gallery of Victoria during this year’s White Night Melbourne. The young artist has excelled with his artistic talents since leaving St Patrick’s, winning the People’s Choice Award at the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards, and then the Youth Award and People’s Choice Award at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards.

More than 70 artworks from around Australia have been selected as finalists in the NAB Flanagan Art Prize, which has continued to grow into one of the region’s most sought after and respected awards.

Now in its ninth year, this year’s exhibition will be held in the St Patrick’s College Old Collegians Association Pavilion from Friday August 19 until Sunday August 28.

Internationally renowned glass artist Dr Tony Hanning has been appointed as the judge of this year’s event. Dr Hanning is based in Morwell and is a lecturer at the Federation University’s Gippsland Campus. He has exhibited his work across the globe including in Taiwan and the USA. He was the first Australian glass artist to be exhibited at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

All artists who have had their works chosen for exhibition are now in contention to share in $7000 in prizemoney.

The overall winner of the NAB Flanagan Art Prize will receive a $5000 cheque. The winner of the Federation University Emerging Artist Award will earn $1500 while the artist deemed to have produced the Most Affordable Artwork (valued at $500 or under) will receive a cheque for $500 courtesy of Lifestyle Travel Ballarat.

All winning artworks are acquired by the College and are displayed in a student access area in Kennedy House, ensuring current students have access to quality work from some of the nation’s most talented and emerging artists.

The exhibition will be launched at a gala function in the College’s OCA Pavilion from 7pm on Friday, August 19. Winners will be announced on the night and some of the region’s finest food and wines will also be on display. Tickets to attend the gala launch are just $20 and can be purchased at this link.
