Fr Kevin Mogg celebrates Ordination Anniversary
September 13, 2016
These Old Boys have enjoyed some monumental moments in each other’s lives and continue to foster a friendship to last a lifetime.
Noel Moore (SPC 1947-51) sent this photo into the College recently, where he and several other Old Boys celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Ordination of fellow Old Collegian, Fr Kevin Mogg AM (SPC 1942-48).
Noel said it was -an honour and privilege- to attend the recent Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Fr Kevin at St Monica’s Parish, in Moonee Ponds on August 7.
Kevin was born in Melbourne on April 23, 1932 and was educated at St Fidelis School, Moreland and St Ambrose School, Brunswick before becoming a boarder at St Patrick’s College, in Ballarat.
After completing his studies, Kevin was ordained on July 22, 1956 at St Patrick’s Cathedral and over the past 60 years, has worked in numerous parishes across Melbourne, offered weekly prison ministry chaplaincy, and continues to offer ongoing ministry to the sick at various aged care centres. Fr Kevin is also on the Board of Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry and is an Interchurch Prison Chaplaincy Member.
In 1980, Fr Kevin was appointed Episcopal Vicar, Social Welfare for three years and began the formal work that has developed over time into Catholic Social Services Victoria.
Fr Kevin was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2000 and in 2002, was made a Member of the Order of Australia -for service to the community, particularly as the founder of an integrated welfare delivery agency, Catholic Social Services Victoria, and as a prison chaplain-.
Testimony to his role in the community, around 2000 people gathered at Padua College, Mornington, back in 2012 to celebrate Fr Kevin’s 80th birthday and to farewell him from- St Macartan’s, Mornington.
Fr Kevin is pictured above, third from left, with his SPC mates John Deany (SPC 1949-53) who won a number of handball championships at SPC in his day, Russell Mogg (1947-51) and Noel Moore at the recent anniversary ceremony.
The men have enjoyed a lasting friendship from their St Patrick’s College days, with Russell, best man at Noel and John’s weddings and Noel, godfather to Russell’s eldest daughter, Jacinta.
Fr Kevin married both men at their respective weddings.
