Senior School Immunisations
Earlier this year the Victorian State Government announced that all school students in Years 10,11 and 12 will receive the Meningococcal W vaccine.
Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria, although the disease is uncommon, it can become very serious very quickly. Meningococcal bacteria are passed from person to person by regular, close, prolonged household and intimate contact. Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal disease and more likely to spread the disease to others.
Meningococcal W has increased across Australia, with Victoria experiencing 48 cases in 2016. The Meningococcal W-containing vaccine is a four-in-one combined vaccine for protection against meningococcal A, C, W, Y strains (one injection).
Over the next few weeks, cards will be distributed to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. These are to be returned before the end of Term 2 at a date to be advised.
The immunisation dates are yet to be confirmed but will take place early in Term 3. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the following:
