Mission Report – August 17, 2017

August is a rich time in our liturgical year. August 8^th is the Solemnity of St Mary of the Cross, Australia’s first canonised saint. St Mary’s story is one of great endurance and inspiration for our times. If you are not familiar with her story may I recommend investing a little time at the website www.marymackillop.org.au. August 15^th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This celebration reminds us that God, having created us out of love, destines us to abide for eternity in that love. We live our lives, in a sense, between these two Mary’s. They remind us of the courage that love brings to the adventure of everyday life and the perfection that only love can offer.

Last Friday the College community joined with our Chaplain, Fr Anthony, to celebrate Mass. It is our aim to gather in Word and Sacrament at least once a term, and Term Three has the special focus of the women at SPC. Inspired by the –Marys- we unite our hearts in thanks for the strength, wisdom, care and humour of the women on staff.

In his engaging homily, Fr Anthony offered three things we may receive from the life of St Mary of the Cross.

Positive life choices that bring life to those around us

Attitude of openness to the love of God and love of our neighbour

Trust in the path that God sets out for each one of us

These three moments of inspiration, when accepted in the spirit of humility most perfectly lived by Mary, Jesus’ mother, put the PAT into St Pat’s. Perhaps stretching Fr Anthony’s image beyond breaking point, August also reminds us that it is Patricia as well as Patrick that is creating a hope-filled future for our young men. The complementarity of these two aspects of St. PAT‘s is an encounter with the unity that God is constantly inviting us into. We are very fortunate to have Fr Anthony as our Chaplain and thank Bishop Paul for his on-going support.
