Arguably our -‘Home’ season commenced today -“ the wonderful fanfare that was our GALA Day was now consigned to a season-highlight memory, now was the business of meeting the challenge of Melbourne Grammar. Last season our defeat to Melbourne ultimately cost us a place in last year’s finals -“ however, our motivation was not historic. The group is driven by a commitment to our platform (of defence and discipline) and to redefining the perception that the competition has of us.-

The score today was pleasing, the second half performance (again) was pleasing -“ from the games there are aspects that we will need to tighten, our ball control through contact, inside shoulder defence and a refinement to our discipline. We will analyse how we conceded the three tries that we did, however credit must be given to the volume and variety to the tries we managed. There was some individual brilliance, team tries, both from enterprising, intricate moves to a simple hands and a catch and drive off a lineout. This ability to score in different ways will certainly help us as we move closer to an opportunity to play finals.

Special mention must go to our Vice-Captain and playmaker, Pou Siola’a, for his control of the game and the manner in which varied our attack and to a number of players whose impact, ball in hand, was noticeable.

St Patrick’s College U15s vs. Haileybury College U15s (A) (19/05)

Going into the game undefeated, we had high expectations of ourselves -“ maintaining our two game winning streak. The boys had lots of confidence coming off of last week’s near-perfect performance against Scotch College, and were almost certain the win was theirs. But, complacency and overconfidence would teach us a valuable lesson this week, with Haileybury proving to be a much worthier opponent than we had anticipated.-

Scoring the first try and converting it through our poor defense and lack of intensity, Haileybury made the game much closer than it should’ve been. In offense, we ran too upright, and we didn’t do our core jobs correctly, and defensively, we lacked intensity in the tackle and competition in the breakdown. Fortunately, we did stay ahead, and even though we played poorly as a team, there were some solid individual performances. The lesson we learned from this game is that we can’t show up expecting to win, we need earn the right to come out victorious.

St Patrick’s College U14s vs. Melbourne Grammar U14s (H) (19/05)

Following on from our U13s, we had a very evenly matched U14 game with St Patrick’s ultimately coming out on top. The first half proved to be the harder of the two halves with tries coming from Declan Dwyer (2), Musso Vincent and Xavier Orriss. However, Melbourne Grammar kept in the game by answering those tries with tries of their own leaving the score at one point in the half 17-17 apiece, however our U14s were able to finish the half in the ascendency with a second try to Declan Dwyer, who had an outstanding game with numerous strong runs.

The second half proved somewhat different with St Patrick’s taking the reins right from the restart. The try scorers in this half were Jayden Tonks, Musso Vincent (2), Deegan Craig-Peters and Declan Dwyer, who completed his hattrick. These tries proved to be too much for Melbourne Grammar to come back from, especially after they suffered a serious injury to one of their star players, late in the second half, who we all wish a speedy recovery to. The final whistle blew with the score being 46-27 with St Patrick’s coming out victorious.

St Patrick’s College U13s vs. Melbourne Grammar U13s (H) (19/05)

Try scorer/s: Riley Mroczkowski, Jordan O’Kane (2), Jayden Tonks (2), Mitch Hutson

Conversion/s: Fletcher Stone (1/5), Gabe Kalouche (0/1)

From the kick off our visitors, Melbourne Grammar, came at us hard and took an early lead, which put St Patrick’s 7 points behind. It did not take long for a well worked try from Riley Mroczkowski to bring SPC back into the game at 7-5. After the try Melbourne Grammar came back really hard, but were resiliently kept out by the St Patrick’s boys, who then turned the ball over to regain possession. Jordan O’Kane, who was the Man of the Match, ran through an unorganised Melbourne Grammar defensive line to go over for his first try. After an extremely aggressive run coming from Jayden Tonks he also went over for his first try of the day. The first half was extremely competitive and the half time score was 15-12 favouring the home team.

The second half was a very competitive half and hard fought by both teams. Mitch Hutson went in for the first try of the half about 5 minutes in. Another quality try followed, Jordan O’Kane’s second, which set the team on the right track for victory. From that try, the game almost seemed to pivot towards our opponents, Melbourne Grammar, when they scored a quick try, which brought the score to 32-22. St Patrick’s seemed to go to sleep at the end of the half and conceded a try just before the final whistle, however forced a knock on from the resulting restart that left the end score, 32-29 and back to back victories for our U13s.-
