News around the Boarding Precinct

• Mr Silcock’s reflection on his recent trip to the N.T.

  –

  I write this to you from Alice Springs. I have almost finished my week in the NT, a week that has seen me travel 5,054kms by plane, 3,493kms by car, visit Darwin, the Tiwi Islands, Jabiru, Katherine, Elliot, Tennant Creek, Cape Crawford, Corella Creek, Ali Curung, Alice Springs and Wallace Rockhole. At each point along this journey I have been able to strengthen existing connections, build new connections and, in some instances, reconnect with past Boarders. The power of positive relationships must not be understated in our line of work, and this week has enabled me to continue this focus. My knowledge of the -‘reality’ that is for so many of our remote Indigenous Boarders was evidently non-existent before this week. This week has most importantly served to affirm to me the criticalness of being a presence for all of our Boarding families, to better understand the -‘reality’ for all of our Boarders, because only then do I believe I shall be able to provide the support that is necessary for each of our Boarders to accomplish their very best. This week we have been so warmly welcomed, hosted, looked after, it has been both humbling and richly rewarding. I shall return to the NT -“ I shall visit other communities, build new relationships, but, most importantly, I shall return to Ballarat better equipped to bring forward positive change to how we support all of our Boarders, but especially our remote Indigenous Boarders.

• Congratulations to the recently announced 2019 Captain of Boarding, Josh Wilson-Stanton, and Vice-Captain, Jack Tillig. We are extremely proud of both these young men and we look forward to the exciting initiatives, ideas and leadership qualities they will both bring to their new roles.

• Congratulations to our Year 12 Indigenous Boarders who were recognised at a Graduation Dinner for all Indigenous students’ in Victorian Catholic Schools on Friday. This dinner was held in Melbourne and hosted by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the following boarders; Ethan McMasters, Adrian Lawrence, Regan Champley, Josh Chatfield and Lochie Brook-Harrison.

• The 2018 Rugby season wrapped up recently with an annual Presentation Night held in the College Pavilion in front of over 180 guests. Many of our boarders were recognised for their achievements on the night including:

  Ngor Bar – Most Improved (U13s)

  Khy Jess – Player’s Player (U13s)

  Musso Vincent – Coaches Award (U14s)

  Jayden Tonks – Player’s Player (U14s)

  Archie Pollard – Best and Fairest and Players’ Player (2ndXV)

  Damien Vincent – Most Improved (2ndXV)

  Inoke Siola’a – Best and Fairest (1stXV)

  Josh Wilson-Stanton – Most Improved and Equal Top Try Scorer (1stXV)

  Pou Siola’a -“ Players’ Player (1stXV)

  Chris Tuitea – Equal Top Try Scorer and Senior Rugby Award (1stXV)

• The 2018 SPC Football season was celebrated at the annual John James Medal Presentation Night. Again, our Boarders featured heavily in the award winners including:

  Scott Carlin – Br. W.T. O’Malley Best and Fairest (1stXVIII)

  Josh Chatfield – Brian Gleeson Medal for Best on ground in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final (1st XVIII)

  Lou White – Most Valuable Player (2ndXVIII Green)

• Congratulations to Connor O’Callaghan (Yr12) and the members of the 1stXI soccer team who claimed a come-from-behind win over BCC in the BAS Soccer Grand Final. With just four minutes of the match remaining, SPC came from 0 – 1 down to win the game, 3 – 1!!

  Further congratulations to the following boarders who were integral members of the under 16.5 Premiership East Point Football team which won the Grand Final over the weekend -“ James Richardson (Yr12), Fletcher Gallagher (Yr11), Liam O’Brien (Yr11), Delroy Tranter (Yr10) and Austin Reinehr (Yr9).

• The end of this term will also mark the end of Kojiro and Mitski’s term exchange with us from Japan. We shall have the chance to farewell them both this Tuesday evening with a special dinner, however it will be a night tinged with sadness, because both young men will be sorely missed by all. We wish both well upon their return to Japan and for all that marks their journey into the future.

• It is with great pleasure that we can announce that the official -‘Grand Opening’ of our Boarding Precinct will be held on Sunday, October 21^st. This will be an outstanding occasion and one that we shall combine with our annual farewell of our Yr12s as they begin their end of year exams. More details will be available in future boarding bulletins.
