2018 VCE and VCAL results

The month of December is a significant one for all Year 12 students across the state. Not only does it mark the official end of secondary school for these students, it is also the time when they receive details of their academic performance in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

All members of the St Patrick’s community share an interest in the academic performance of the Year 12 class. It is a time to celebrate the academic excellence and endeavour of individual students and of the year level as a whole. Following is a summary of the academic achievements of the Year 12 class of 2018.

General information:

 

 

• • 210 boys completed Year 12 studies at St Patrick’s College in 2018. 205 in the VCE program and a further five in the Applied Learning (Senior VCAL) program. 

 

 

 

• • 100% percent of the boys studying in the VCE program attained their Victorian Certificate of Education and each of the five Applied Learning students gained their Senior VCAL certificate. 

 

 

 

• • 344 students were enrolled in at least one VCE Units 3/4 subject. These boys completed studies in 48 different VCE Unit 3/4 subjects in 2018. 

 

 

 

• • There were 52 study scores of 40 or above before scaling (or 5.4% of all study scores), and an additional 21 study scores of 40 or above after scaling. These scores were attained in 22 different VCE and VET studies. 

 

 

 

• • Fourteen students attained an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 90 and above. A further 27 students attained an ATAR of 80 and above. 

 

 

 

• • The 2018 College Dux, with an ATAR of 99.05, was Samuel Williams. Congratulations to Sam on this outstanding result! 

 

 

 

• • The median study score for all VCE and VET studies was 30 and the median ATAR was 61.2 

 

 

 

• • 145 Year 12 students applied for a tertiary place (69% of all Year 12 boys) 

 

 

 

• • 251 students were enrolled in at least one of the 23 VCE VET certificates studied in 2018, attaining 97% unit competency completion. 

 

 

Traditionally, an ATAR of 90 or above has been used as a measure of academic excellence. In 2018, fourteen students attained this outstanding result:

When the academic performance of the 27 boys who attained an ATAR score of 80 and above is combined with these boys, then it becomes clear that many students in the Year 12 class of 2018 have attained a very high level of academic excellence.

 

A study score of 50 represents the highest mark achievable within the VCE for any particular subject. This extraordinary result was achieved by two students in 2018 -“ Matthew Duffy in Visual Communication Design and Aidan Hanrahan in Biology. This truly outstanding result by Matthew and Aidan, who also both happen to be Year 11 students, aptly reflects the exceptional quality of both boys’ work and their excellent commitment to classwork throughout 2018. Congratulations to Matthew and his Visual Communication Design teacher, Mr Jared Lynn and to Aidan and his Biology teacher, Ms Stephanie Parsons!

 

Another of the measures commonly reported on to assess academic success in VCE studies is the number of study scores of 40 and above. Following is a list of all boys who attained this result both before scaling and after scaling (*) in 2018:
