On Sunday May 26, we hosted our Reconciliation Week Mass in the College, which was then followed by a Dinner in the Old Collegians’ Pavilion. We look forward to this event greatly each year as it is a chance for our Boarding Community and members from our broader College Community to come together to celebrate our journey together towards reconciliation. All our Indigenous boys who attended the event received a special candle to mark this meaningful event. A special mention must go to Myles King, who spoke to our whole Community at the dinner about his journey from a remote community in NT to St Patrick’s College and what both Reconciliation means to him and the importance of grasping the opportunities presented to our Boarders here at the College. Myles was warmly applauded by all in attendance. He has also been invited to attend the next College Board Meeting, which will be a special occasion for him.

On Tuesday May 28, the College held a special Reconciliation Assembly, which was led and organised by our Indigenous department. It was great to see so many of our Indigenous Boarders play a role in organising the event. A highlight of this event is the cultural music/dancing item that the boys perform to showcase their tradition to many of our College’s non-Indigenous students who may not be familiar with it. This journey together promotes the key theme to Reconciliation. Special mention must go to Tyrese Thompson for his part of -‘MC-ing’ the event, which he did with distinction.

Last Sunday May 26 several of our boys had the opportunity to attend the Dreamtime game held at the MCG between Essendon and Richmond. The boys loved the event and a number were very happy with the Tigers’ victory. The Staff joining them were extremely proud of the way they conducted themselves at the event, looking out for one another and carrying themselves like a stand-up St Patrick’s College Boarder. Congratulations also to former Boarder, Daniel Rioli, who had designed the Richmond Indigenous round jersey.

Last Saturday May 25, was a milestone in the College’s Rugby History as our 1stXV won over St Kevin’s College for the very first time. The game was very close as both sides were in with a chance to win, however our St Pat’s boys fought to the very end and came away with an historic result. Well done to all involved, but especially our Boarders, Damien Vincent, Xavier Hayter, Ethan Councillor, Tyrese Thompson and Charlie Delaney.

Our Boarders have continued to volunteer for various Community initiatives in the last few weeks. Several of our boys each week volunteer for the Smith Family tutoring, which is held in our Boarding Precinct Dining Room. Each Monday it’s great to see our boys interacting with young children from the wider Ballarat Community. We also had several boy’s volunteer to help with the RSPCA’s -‘Million Paws Walk’, which was held at Victoria Park. Our boys had a very early start and were invaluable in helping run this Community event. A special thanks must go to those that volunteer on a regular basis and we hope that more will volunteer when the opportunities present themselves.

Congratulations must go to Isaac Wareham on being selected for the Vic Country Under 18’s XVIII. We look forward to following Isaac’s progress throughout the representative season.

Several of our Junior Boarders have been very successful within the College the last two weeks. Firstly, both Eric Yang (Yr7) and Dwayne Hayes (Yr7) were successful in their bids to become Form Captains. This is great start for both these young men especially as Eric is our first International Boarder, from China, and Dwayne, who comes from the remote community in Ali Curung in the Northern Territory. Secondly, Ngor and Chan Bar (Yr8) have been selected to represent Nunan House on the Student Congress. This is a great achievement as these positions are voted on by their peers. We congratulate all these boys on their wonderful achievements.
