2019 VCE and VCAL results

December 19, 2019

Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning Mr Stephen Hill provides the following full report on the College’s 2019 VCE and VCAL results:

“The month of December is a significant one for all Year 12 students across the state. Not only does it mark the official end of secondary school for these students, it is also the time when they receive details of their academic performance in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

All members of the St Patrick’s community share an interest in the academic performance of the Year 12 class. It is a time to celebrate the academic excellence and endeavour of individual students and of the year level as a whole. Following is a summary of the academic achievements of the Year 12 class of 2019.

The median study score for all VCE and VET studies was 29 and the median ATAR was 62.45

General information:

  • 176 boys completed Year 12 studies at St Patrick’s College in 2019. Of these, 171 completed studies in the VCE program (scored and non-scored) and a further five in the Applied Learning (Senior VCAL) program.
  • 98% percent of the boys studying in the VCE program attained their Victorian Certificate of Education.
  • 278 students were enrolled in at least one VCE Units 3/4 subject. These boys completed studies in 40 different VCE Unit 3/4 subjects in 2019.
  • There were 47 study scores of 40 or above before scaling (or 5.7% of all study scores), and an additional 12 study scores of 40 or above after scaling. These scores were attained in 16 different VCE and VET studies.
  • Twelve students attained an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 90 and above. A further 17 students attained an ATAR of 80 and above.
  • The 2019 College Dux, with an ATAR of 99.90, was Matthew Duffy. Congratulations to Matthew on this truly outstanding result!
  • The median study score for all VCE and VET studies was 29 and the median ATAR was 62.45
  • 113 Year 12 students applied for a tertiary place (66% of all Year 12 boys)
  • 246 students were enrolled in at least one of the 24 VCE VET certificates studied in 2019, attaining 95% unit competency completion.

Traditionally, an ATAR of 90 or above has been used as a measure of academic excellence. In 2019, twelve students attained this outstanding result:

When the academic performance of the 17 boys who attained an ATAR score of 80 and above is combined with these boys, then it becomes clear that many students in the Year 12 class of 2019 have attained a very high level of academic excellence.

A study score of 50 represents the highest mark achievable within the VCE for any particular subject. In 2019, this extraordinary result was achieved by Aidan Hanrahan in English Language. This outstanding result aptly reflects the exceptional quality of Aidan’s work and his excellent commitment to classwork throughout 2019. Congratulations to Aidan and his English Language teacher, Ms Sarah Sharp. This result is even more exceptional when we consider that Aidan also achieved a Study Score of 50 in 2018 in VCE Units 3/4 Biology!

Another of the measures commonly reported on to assess academic success in VCE studies is the number of study scores of 40 and above. Following is a list of all boys who attained this result both before scaling (^) and after scaling (*) in 2019:

The VCE (Baccalaureate) was introduced in 2014 to support the State Government’s objectives to encourage more students to include languages and high-level mathematics in their senior secondary program of study. This year, the Victorian Certificate of Education (Baccalaureate) was awarded to Matthew Duffy and Hugo Ferguson. Congratulations to both of these boys!

St Patrick’s offers a variety of learning pathways to ensure that each boy has every opportunity to achieve personal success. Our 2019 Applied Learning students continued their success, with four boys awarded the Senior Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. Five Senior School students successfully attained an apprenticeship during the school year (along with an additional 17 students who gained an apprenticeship before the commencement of the 2019 school year) and 21 boys have been successful in gaining direct employment or a traineeship since the end of the school year.

I would like to conclude by acknowledging the fine work of all St Patrick’s teachers and our support staff. The College’s level of academic success in 2019 did not happen by chance. It reflects a commitment to establishing a teaching and learning culture that values and supports academic excellence and endeavour. This has happened because St Patrick’s teachers remain committed to continually reviewing and developing classroom programs that provide every opportunity for our boys to experience academic success.

The College’s level of academic success reflects a commitment to establishing a teaching and learning culture that values and supports academic excellence and endeavour.
