Old Boys in the News – March 2020

Our Old Boys have been busy, including:

Jimmy Fahey.

• We heard from Old Collegian Jimmy Fahey (SPC 2007-12) recently. Jimmy is now a doctor and is completing a year of residency at Eastern Health, in Melbourne, focussing on critical care medicine, which he is keen to explore in the coming few years. This followed an internship at Austin Health in 2019. While completing a Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery at Monash University, Jimmy spent time studying in Stockholm, Sweden and undertaking a medical elective in Malawi, Africa, working in a hospital in what he described as an “intense and eye-opening experience”. Outside of work, Jimmy enjoys spending time with his “loving girlfriend, morning coffees, language learning, rock climbing, and travel in plenty”. Jimmy has also been a regular Old Collegian and guest speaker at the annual SPC Careers Expo, sharing his medical journey onto interested students. Thanks for the update Jimmy!
• Old Collegian Matt Short’s (SPC 2008-13) talks about his plans in light of his Sheffield Shield season coming to an abrupt close due to COVID-19. The Ballarat cricketer who plays for Victoria was set to take on Tasmania for a spot in the Marsh Sheffield Shield season grand final. But New South Wales was awarded this season’s Sheffield Shield title, after Cricket Australia cancelled the remainder of games. To read more, click here
• Well done to Old Collegian Josh Pegg (SPC 2015-19, PY2020) who finished third in the EJ Cleary medal count at the Ballarat Cricket Association Awards recently, as well as Lachie Snaith (SPC 2013-16) who was awarded a medal for Best Bowling Figures in the 2^nd XI. To read more, click here

• Well done to Liam Haintz (SPC 2011-16) who has left state league soccer for the National Premier League, joining the ranks of Ballarat City in 2020. The 21-year-old will play in the newly-formed National Premier League three competition. To read more, click here
• Great to see local paramedic Sean Duggan (SPC 1986-91) helping country towns to be trained as Heart Safe Communities. To read more, click here

• It was a great day for Dean farming family, Brian Maher (SPC 1968-70, PY1972) and son Danny (SPC 1994-99), who nearly reached a new national lamb price record at the Ballarat sheep sales recently. Danny was in high spirits when his photo was snapped with his young son Tommy. To read more, click here
• Great to catch up recently with former border Michael Seddon (SPC 1981-86) who is the national director of Australian Taxation Office Prosecutions. Keep up the great work Michael!
• Great to catch up with Rory Conroy (SPC 2007-12) recently, who is now working in a casino in northern Queensland and is the proud dad of an eight-month-old daughter.
• It was great to catch up with Old Boy Tony Brooks (SPC 1974-76) recently. Tony has enjoyed a long career in education, teaching at St Joseph’s, Benalla for his first two years working life, the next eight years at St Monica’s, Wodonga and for the last 30 years at St Patrick’s, in Albury. Great to hear from you Tony!
  

  Sean Callanan.

• It was great to catch up with Old Boy Sean Callanan (SPC 1987-90) who runs his own business sports digital agency Sports Geek and esports League of Legends team Gravitas. Sean works with teams and leagues to build digital fan bases and hosts a weekly podcast, where he talks to experts in and around the sports business world.
