Performing Arts Report

August 5, 2021

by Ms Monique Allen, Head of Co-Curricular Performance

The most esteemed public speaking event on our calendar is the Annual Purton Oratory Competition. 2021 will be the 80th year of this event. The first ‘Purton’ Prize was in 1940 and had been created to honour Brother Purton, an educator who was deeply passionate about the skill of public speaking.

On Thursday, August 26 students from Years 7-12 will compete in the following events:

Juniors:

  • The Mary Purcell Debate
  • The Breach Oratory Prepared Speech
  • The Major Brian Broadribb Impromptu Speaking

Seniors:

  • The W.T.Doyle Debate
  • The Purton Oratory Prepared Speech
  • Sir Hugh Devine Impromptu Speaking.

We are so excited to see the talent that will no doubt be on show at the Purton Oratory Competition. Student registration closes this Friday, Augst 6. Register by filling out this form: https://forms.office.com/r/fupjkS3ULX

Debating

The South Street ACU Debating Cup is fast approaching in Week 6, we wish all our debating teams all the best as they prepare for the competition. Participating students are asked to please check their emails and communicate with Ms Allen should they have any questions.

Legacy Public Speaking

We have four St Pat’s students competing at the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award which will take place on Wednesday, August 25. We wish the following boys all the best with their five minute prepared and two-minute impromptu speeches: Jonathon Stephens, Archer Mohr, Nicholas Willis Pitt and Noah Eales.

Skittles

Skittles is a series of short skits that are being prepared by students in Years 7-10 who are busy rehearsing Thursday lunch times. The cast and crew are working collaboratively to improvise and develop these scenes. Pending COVID restrictions the performance may be put together as a short film to enable friends and family to watch from home. If we can have an audience, we will present this production in week 9 of this term. Keep your eye out for further information closer to the time.
