Peter Franklyn Giuliano (SPC 1945-48, PY1950)

Old Collegian Peter Franklyn Giuliano (SPC 1945-48, PY1950) sadly passed away on December 30, 2021 at BlueCross Hansworth in Mulgrave, aged 88 years.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Peter’s wife Judith and their extended family and friends.
In sharing his passing, Judith said Peter was “always very proud to have attended the College, in particular to have participated in the football, tennis and athletics sporting achievements”.
“At the age of 15, Peter captained the SPC Football team that included future Brownlow Medallists Brian Gleeson of St Kilda and John James of Carlton, with other legendary players, Brian Frawley and Gerald Gleeson, also in the team.”
Peter was born on April 3, 1933. He was a boarder at SPC from Hamilton, along with his brother William, known as Bill (SPC 1943-47) (dec), who became a renowned spinal and sports physiotherapist in Melbourne and later in Sorrento. Bill was the senior physiotherapist for AFL teams Footscray (1965-68) and Collingwood (1972-1996) which included their premiership win in 1990 when Leigh Matthews was the coach.
Peter was a talented sportsman and enjoyed success in football, cricket, athletics and boxing at SPC.

Alongside captaining the Under 15 Football side in 1948, Peter was named the Under 15 Tennis Champion in 1947. He enjoyed athletics in his junior year, winning the inter-school Under 14 relay and made the Under 15 tennis final. Notably, Peter was also named Handball Champion in 1946 as well as the Under 15 Boxing Champion.  He was also a member of the junior music group.

After leaving SPC, Peter completed National Service Training in 1952 with the RAAF, based at Laverton and East Sale with the rank of “Aircraftman”.
He developed his skills as a short order cook supporting his parents running their well-known guest house in Warburton’s woodlands area, called Mayerloyd.
He moved to Young, NSW, in his mid-20s and worked as a mine manager at Young Mining Co, owned by his uncles, extracting magnesite for the production of high grade magnesium oxide used in agriculture, industrial and pharmaceuticals.
In 1965, Peter married Judith Corcoran who nursed at the Mercy Hospital in Young and they became proud parents of Jacinta (born 1966) and Mark (1968).
In 1971, the couple moved to Mulgrave, in Victoria, with the family continuing to expand, proudly welcoming Matthew (1971) and Lucia (1977).
During the 1970s, Peter worked at Edwards Business Machines, initially as a sales representative for Sharp calculators which suited Peter as he was such a great people person, and he was later promoted to senior management as the National Agency Development Manager when the business was acquired by Hugin Australia.
During the 1980s to the early 2000s, Peter worked in the investment and insurance industry at Manchester Unity and then later at Australian Eagle, and Catholic Church Insurance.
Peter and Judith moved into Cumberland View Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill in 2016 and enjoyed this living experience together with many of their friends also residing in the village.
In February 2020, Peter was admitted to BlueCross Hansworth (Mulgrave) aged care residence for specialised care which was a particularly difficult time for his family given the onset of COVID lockdowns, before sadly passing away on December 30, 2021, aged 88 years, shortly after attending his final Christmas celebration with all his family.
Peter always loved family activities and had a life-long passion for horse racing, studying the form guide most weekends which originated from pencilling the bets for his father Frank who was a bookmaker in the early days.
Peter also loved watching the Mighty Blues, Carlton, or any AFL game for that matter, and supported all his children with their sporting activities, particularly loudly barracking at the netball and enjoyed playing golf with his mates.
Above all things, Peter was a devout Catholic and proud of his faith, supporting the Bingo, Fete, Parish Finance Council, maintenance work with “Dad’s Army”, and many other activities at the Oblate Parish of St John Vianney for nearly 50 years, including visiting sick or elderly parishioners to provide Holy Communion as a Eucharistic Special Minister.
Peter is much loved and sadly missed by Judith and all his family, in particular his 12 grandchildren and partners, with his first great-grandchild arriving in February this year and a second expected in August.
