We are very saddened to learn of the passing of Bryan Gordon Mair (SPC 1946-48, PY1951) on November 21, 2020 in Warrnambool.
Bryan was the cousin of fellow Old Collegian David Tydeman (SPC 1952-60), who has very kindly assisted with this tribute on Bryan’s life. Bryan attended school in Ballarat for three years between 1946-1948 and he was very proud of his time at St Patrick’s College as a boarder.
His early life was in Melbourne, but because of the difficult times of the depression, his parents moved back to be closer to his mother’s family in Edenhope. Both his parents died tragically within a month of each other in 1947.
He worked many years in Telecommunications and with his wife Jill raised seven children. He was very closely involved with establishing Our Lady help of Christians Church in Warrnambool.
He served as inaugural President of the Parish council for nine years working closely with the founding parish priest, the late Father Patrick Downes.
Bryan had a great love of all sports fostered during his time at St Pat’s, with his main loves being competitive tennis and Australian rules football. The common threads woven through Bryan’s 86 years were faith, values, family, friends, community and sport.
During his time at St Pat’s, Bryan was active in sport and was named the U13 Tennis Champion for the College in 1946, and honoured again as a Tennis Champion of the College in 1948.
