2019 SPC Tour of Ireland – Day 10 Giant’s Causeway & Belfast
April 12, 2019
After an early breakfast, where the highlight on the menu was fried soda bread, we set off for the Giant’s Causeway. The boys were in awe of this magnificent, natural wonder. Armed with audio tours, they had the opportunity to listen to a blend of well-informed history, geology and fable surrounding the battle of the giants. – The challenge of climbing over the basalt columns and walking the circuit helped recharge the boys.
Next on our agenda was a tour of the Belfast murals, Shankill Rd and Falls Rd. Further the boys had the opportunity to sign the Peace Wall and were given a good explanation of the ongoing challenges facing Northern Ireland, in particular the practice of still locking several gates around area nightly despite the Good Friday Agreement.
The Titanic Exhibition finally gave meaning to the movie which many of the boys had watched on the flight over. This 3-dimensional exhibition proved to be both informative and entertaining. – It incorporated the history of Belfast’s industry and shipping. It focused on the building of the Titanic, the people on the voyage and the aftermath of the disaster. As staff we enjoyed watching the level of engagement of our boys.
Some free time and a three-course meal ended a happy day of touring. The challenge for this evening is to get all those purchases to fit neatly into cases ready for an early departure tomorrow.
