March 29, 2022
We are devastated to share the sudden passing of Old Collegian and former staff member James Petrie (SPC 2001-06) on February 26, 2022.
James attended SPC between 2001-2006 and was captain of the successful First XI BAS Champions 2006 and captain of the first SPC soccer team to defeat St Kevin’s College. He was an exceptional sports player in soccer and cricket for SPC.
He was also a member of the 2nd XI Cricket and was named player of the year in 2005 “for his consistency with the new ball” and described as a “true competitor”.
James was an outstanding sportsman locally representing Waubra in AFL premiership teams as well as local BDSA Championship soccer teams. James also worked on staff at St Patrick’s College in the boarding house.
James’ father Julian Petrie was also a member of staff at St Patrick’s College from 1989 into the 90’s and coached senior cricket as well as teaching RE and sport. Julian has been a member of staff at Damascus College for many years. James’ mother Anne is also well known in the local community as a long term member of staff at St Columba’s Primary School.
James’ brother Luke also attended SPC between 2003-2007, PY2008 and his sisters Jessica and Emma attended Damascus College.
James was both well-known and well-respected in the local community and a popular PE and VET teacher at Ballarat High School for many years since his graduation.
We extend our deepest condolences to James’ extended family, including his partner Jane.
His former classmates described James as being “an incredibly special person who could find the joy in the small things” and “a great person to be around”.
Hundreds of mourners turned out for James’ funeral at St Patrick’s Cathedral on March 14 and further tributes from the funeral service, showing just how much James will be missed to so many, can be read here and here and here
