by Director of Boarding, Mr Brendon Gilbert

Dear boarding families,

We are delighted with how our boarders have returned and commenced Semester 2. They continue to fill the boarding house and school communities with enthusiasm and spirit. We are tremendously proud of their contributions to the various aspects of our school and thrilled to share these with our community.

Student Achievements

Chris Nolan Award Winners – congratulations to Hugo Johnston, Eric Yang, Lachie Fazzolari, and Mitch Collins. Chris Nolan is an Old Collegian that exemplified the pursuit of excellence across a range of critical academic programs and College activities. A Chris Nolan award recognises and celebrates the academic achievements of students that rank in the top 10% of their cohort across all subjects.

VCE Unit 3 Principal’s Excellence Awards – Mitch Collins (Environmental Science) and Ed de Salis (VET Sport and Rec)

Eric Yang – congratulations to Eric, who was part of the St Patrick’s Debating Team that competed in the Debaters Association of Victoria Final.

Ed de Salis – congratulations to Ed for being selected for the Southwest Victoria Hockey Team that competed in the State Championships during the recent holiday break.

Jimmy Duxson – congratulations to Jimmy for being selected for the U16 Western Waves representative cricket team that will compete in Term 4.

Brayden Purchase – congratulations to Brayden for debuting for the GWV Rebels against the Western Jets. We are very proud of Brayden’s achievement, which is an excellent reward for his dedication and commitment to being the best footballer and person he can be.

Liam Farnsworth – congratulations to Liam for debuting for the Redan senior side against Darley. Liam played a vital role in the win and was named one of the best players, along with fellow boarder Harry Lawson.

First XVIII Herald Sun Semi-Final – Congratulations to Khy Jess, Harry Lawson, Luke Smith, and Beau Tedcastle on their selection in the First XVIII side, defeating Emmanuel College, 67 to 36.

Intermediate Herald Sun Semi-Final – Jack Ough, Strahan Robinson, Ollie Hannaford, Calvin Peris-Chong, and Brayden Wright on their selection in the Intermediate Team, defeating Marcellin College, 102 to 21.

Boarding House Awards

Citizenship Awards – In the first three weeks of this term, the Citizenship Awards have gone to Year 11 students Luke Smith, Harry Lawson, Hugo Delaney, and Ngor Bar for helping the sports department by umpiring the co-curricular activities.

Thanks to Tamara for instigating the ‘gratitude jar’ where boys can anonymously nominate their peers for their helpful contributions to the boarding house. The winner of this week’s award goes to Brayden Purchase for helping his peers raise the College flags in the dreary Ballarat conditions on various occasions.

Boarders’ Basketball Team

Following the highly successful Boarders’ Cricket Team, we now have the Boarders’ Basketball Team competing each Thursday night this term. Round 1 saw the boarders take on SPC Green to run out narrow winners, 45 points to 40 points. After dominating the first half leading by 20 points, SPC Green fought back and hit the lead with 2 minutes to go. However, the boarders quickly wrestled back the lead to run out eventual winners. The top points scorers were Strahan Robinson with 17 and Jack James 10.

Value Add

Goals setting

There is plenty on offer for our boarders to enrich their boarding experience, shape their character and support their growth this term. We are grateful to Liam and Tamara, Years 11 and 12 Head of House, and Years 7 – 10 Head of House, respectively, for working with our young people on personal and academic goal setting. This is a critical process to set direction, define success and create purpose in our young people’s lives. I encourage you to discuss your son’s personal and academic goals with them throughout the term.

Year 11 Leadership Program

As our Year 12s near their exams and look to the end of their St Patrick’s College journey, our Year 11s will soon assume the responsibility as the most senior students in the house. Therefore, we are preparing for that transition to have a strong and capable cohort of students to build on the example Year 12s have set this year. We started our program by focusing on self-leadership, the ability to take responsibility for yourself and control your destiny. I am excited for our boarding community as our Year 11s fill me with enthusiasm and confidence that they will lead us strongly into the future.

Circuit Breaker Weekend

On the recommendation of Catholic Education Ballarat, all Catholic schools in the Diocese of Ballarat have announced a circuit breaker weekend during Term 3. As part of this measure, St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, has decided to close on Friday, 12 August and Monday, 15 August. We encourage all boarders to make the most of this long weekend at home to decompress and return refreshed and ready to finish Term 3 in good shape.

Best wishes,

The Boarding Team
