Honouring one of our greats in Laurie Larmer Cup
November 1, 2024
Our student community were out in force on Tuesday, 29 October for the 2024 Laurie Larmer Cup.
This year, a round-robin badminton tournament was held in the College gymnasium. Driven this year by the Year 11 VCE Vocational Major (VM) class, students took the initiative to organise this tournament for our younger students, exemplifying the spirit of the Laurie Larmer Cup.
Involved in the running of this year’s competition were Year 11 students, Izaac Ash, Luke Atkinson, Cooper Battye, Jack Burton, Zeb Evans, Patrick Gowans, Elias Hoad, Harrison Jeffrey, Elliott Johnston, Killian Kirby, Paddy Klain, Ryan Kroussoratis, Max Lynch, Xavier Matherson, Caine Skinner, Kody Slater and Flynn Smith.
The Laurie Larmer Cup was held for the first time last year as a senior interhouse football competition in salute to one of the College’s greatest ever war heroes Laurie Larmer (SPC 1935-40). Laurie sadly passed away last year, aged 99 years.
Laurie gained national and worldwide recognition and respect when he used the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II to embark upon a remarkable story of forgiveness and redemption.
A bomber pilot in the RAAF, Laurie wrote letters of forgiveness to the German cities he bombed during World War II expressing his regret for the deaths of innocent civilians caused by his actions.
To his amazement, five of the leaders of these cities replied to Laurie with moving letters of their own and Laurie later made a trip to Germany, where civic receptions were held in his honour.

The winners of this year’s Laurie Larmer Cup will be announced at our next College Assembly.
