KRC Update – February 21, 2019

WIRED -“ Wide Interest Reading for English Development Years 7 – 9

WIRED has begun in earnest for the 2019 year.- This year we welcome Mrs Ann-Maree Hannon to the WIRED team.- Ann-Maree is a teacher librarian who brings a wealth of knowledge in the area of Young Adult Literature which will assist our endeavours to support young adolescent boys as they develop and nurture a love of reading.- Boys attend a dedicated quiet reading session fortnightly and are supported by the classroom teacher and librarians to improve their reading capacity and skills.- Teachers and librarians engage with the boys to assist book selection and the silent reading begun in these WIRED sessions is expected to be further nurtured in the home environment.

-Children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued- (Baker and Scher, 2002).

Reading is undoubtedly important to an individual’s ability to develop themselves to their capacity, to become lifelong learners to confidently meet what their futures hold.-

According to the International Reading Association (Moore et al., 1999, p. 3):

– Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. They will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future. In a complex and sometimes even dangerous world, their ability to read can be crucial.

We look forward to meeting your sons as they visit the library, renewing and borrowing reading materials to enrich their personal lives and enhance their education journey.-
