Old Boys in torch relay run to celebrate Centenary of Legacy
August 30, 2023
We look forward to seeing members of the SPC community running a leg each in the forthcoming Legacy Torch relay, which will be arriving in Ballarat soon as part of the Centenary of Legacy celebrations.
Old Collegians Steve Moneghetti (SPC 1975-80), Allan McKinnon (SPC 1966-69), Gerard Fitzgerald (SPC 1973, PY1975) and former staff member Brian Broadribb will be taking part when the torch arrives in Ballarat on 19 September 2023.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Legacy, co-founded by another Old Collegian Frank Doolan (SPC 1908), a former boarder and an ANZAC who served in the Engineers. Frank was a surveyor by profession and was instrumental after WWI in helping in the design of the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. To learn about Frank’s life, click here
Legacy has provided a century of service, providing thousands of veterans’ widows and children and also assisted with support of veterans’ families in later years whereby the veteran was incapable of adequately caring for his family due to physical or mental health issues.
To celebrate this milestone, a torch relay began in April at Pozieres in France and has travelled to various areas on the Western Front to England and onto Australia, where it will make its way around the country.
The torch relay is also promoting Legacy’s “Legs for Legacy” fundraising mission to raise $1 million to continue Legacy’s work into the future.
