South Street -“ ACU Debating Challenge Cup
This week, a number students participated in the heats for the ACU Debating Challenge Cup as a part of the 125th Royal South Street Competitions. The competition took place at the Ballarat Town Hall in the Council Chambers and provided an excellent opportunity for those competing to further their debating skills and experience.
The St Patrick’s College teams performed very well and as a College we experienced success across each of the divisions.
In the Year 7/8 Division, one of our Year 7 teams consisting of John Madigan, Jeremy Spedding and Sam Tilley were victorious against Ballarat High School. In addition to this, Will Frawley, Ethan Jungbauer and Harvey Woodburn of Year 8 won their debate against Loreto College.
In the Year 9/10 Division a further two teams won their debate. Aidan Hanrahan, Damian VanGaans and Jack Trenorden of Year 9 were victorious against Ballarat High School and the Year 10 team featuring Oscar Grigg, Xavier O’Shea and Ryan Mulheron won their debate against Phoenix College.
And in the Year 11/12 Division, our Year 12 team featuring Brad Dwyer, David O’Doherty, Liam O’Shea and James Parini were victorious against Daylesford Secondary College.
Congratulations to all of the boys who competed in the competition throughout the week.
I would like to thank Sarah Sharp, Jen Casey, Caroline Pruscino, Dionne Tually and Nathaniel Winfield for their hard work and dedication in helping the boys prepare for these debates.
2017 Combined College Production
On Friday July 22, it was announced that the Combined College Production for 2017 will be West Side Story. The announcement was made in the OCA Pavilion followed by a screening of the movie.
West Side Story is a modern day version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The setting is transformed to modern-day New York City, as two idealistic youths find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
Auditions for West Side Story will be held in Term 4. Further information will follow.
