Where are they now – Nicholas McMaster (SPC 2008-13)

August 4, 2019

The College recently reconnected with former College Vice Captain Nicholas McMaster (SPC 2008-13) who is enjoying the life of a graduate lawyer following five years at university.

Nicholas McMaster.

Where has life taken you since leaving SPC?

For the most part, further study! In 2014 I started my five-year course in Commerce and Law at Deakin University in Geelong. I loved my years at Deakin and gave me so many great opportunities including a study trip to London in 2017. After finishing my degrees, I went on a trip to Canada and America before starting full time work.

What are your fondest memories of your time at St Patrick’s College?

Spending time with your mates every day. I think only once you leave school you begin to appreciate those times at SPC. I also enjoyed playing basketball and rowing for SPC.

Which teacher from your time at SPC had the greatest impact on you? Why?

I was fortunate enough to have several great teachers over my time at SPC, but Ms Elizabeth Ryan had the greatest impact on me. I had Ms Ryan for Legal Studies in Year 12 who inspired me to become a lawyer. I am currently a graduate at Heinz & Partners and loving it.

How has your education shaped your professional life?

Schooling has been a major part of my life and certainly critical for my chosen career. Throughout my time at SPC and university developing my ‘people-skills’ and maturity has also proved just as important.

How has your time at SPC shaped your personal values and your family life?

That is a difficult question to answer! A couple of things that come to mind is the importance of hard work and giving back to the community.

If you could pass on one message to the students of today, what would it be?

Just be nice to others; it’s simple and goes a long way.
