Paul Madden (SPC 1990-95) lost his battle with cancer on May 17, 2015.
During his time at SPC Paul was a Sports Prize recipient, and was vice captain of the 1st XVIII football team. Paul was also a member of the 1st XI Cricket team, and the Seconds Team Centurions.
During his battle with cancer Paul signed up for the most aggressive treatments his doctors could provide. Paul had been diagnosed with a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma. Paul endured two major operations, eight months of chemotherapy with five different types of toxic drugs, 41 hits of radiation therapy, and a couple of stints in intensive care. He followed, to the letter, all of the orders from his big team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists at Peter Mac. Unfortunately a miracle never happened, and we have lost a great dad (of two), husband, son, brother, mate, teacher and colleague, aged just 37.
One of the saddest parts of Paul’s story is that very few advancements have been made in the treatment of his type of cancer in three decades. So while doctors are working so very hard to beat it, science hasn’t provided them with the right weapons.
Friends of Paul have now rallied around his family in an effort to raise funds for his two children Joseph and Heidi. A fund raising dinner will be held later this year and we encourage people in the broad SPC community to consider attending to help a family in need.
